Nine Baby Items You Didn’t Know You Needed

Are you a new parent looking to build their registry? Or someone looking to get their mom friend a gift? Or someone, like me, who’s always on the hunt for the next gadget to help make your mom life a tad bit easier? Wherever you fall on the spectrum, I have compiled a list of nine baby items that have been incredibly useful and I’m confident others will think so as well.

1) Car Child Monitor

This car monitor may seem like an unnecessary luxury until you get one and wonder why you didn’t purchase it sooner. It replaces the need to constantly use your rear view mirror, or even worse constantly turn around, to check up on your baby while driving. This is particularly useful when your child’s carseat is rear facing and you want to keep tabs on them in the car.

The monitor sits on top of your dashboard and it gets powered from your car accessory outlet so you don’t need to worry about batteries. I personally affix mine with command strips to make it stationary.

At under $40, it’s more affordable than many of its competitors, and it has been one of my favorite baby purchases this time around.

2) Remote Baby Camera

As someone who has used at least 4 different cameras/monitors, this is by far my favorite for several reasons:
• It has an infrared feature which gives crisp and clear videos even in the complete darkness
• You can use it remotely (I was able to watch my child at home while I was on a different continent)
• It is way cheaper (less than $40) than other options which can run you up to $200
• The viewing app is powered through your phone & is very user-friendly with easy set up

Although I love this camera, I do still have another one that comes with a monitor that I use daily. My son has transitioned out of our room so I keep a monitor on perpetually at night, and it’s more practical for me to keep a monitor on vs keeping a phone app open. Despite that, I still 100% recommend this baby camera.

3) Universal car seat carrier

This car seat carrier has been incredible for travelling, shopping, and running errands because it’s lightweight, foldable, and has ample storage. I love that it’s universal for all infant car seats, and I settled on this option over the $600 car seat & base combos (Doona, Evenflo Shyft, etc) due to its ease of use, its storage, and lower price at $79.

I do own a more expensive stroller which does have a smoother ride, but it’s bulky and not as simple to use when I’m out and about.

4) Boba Wrap

I’ve been baby wearing since my four year old was an infant and the Boba Wrap has been my go to ever since. Despite it being gifted to me from another mom friend who also got lots of use out of it, it’s still going strong and is in good shape. This is a testament to how durable and long lasting the Boba Wrap is.

One thing that sets the Boba Wrap apart from other wraps is that it’s stretchy which allows you to customize how snug of a fit you want it to be. After getting over the learning curve of figuring out how to wrap it, you realize how useful it is in freeing up your hands and allowing you to multitask more effectively. Added bonus: you can even nurse your baby while wearing it!

Here is a quick tutorial in how to configure the wrap:

5) Haaka

This silicone breast pump/milk catcher gets daily use and out of all my baby items is probably my favorite at the moment. Now this is an item that a mom may not find useful if she’s not breastfeeding so that’s important to note. But for the nursing mom who wants to catch the milk from the opposite breast while nursing, this simple yet effective manual pump is a game changer.

I have two other expensive hospital grade pumps and even though they’re great, I never use them because the Haaka alone gets the job done for me. I have literally passively built a large freezer stash of milk for my baby using the Haaka, and it has helped me maintain my milk supply with minimal effort. It’s easy to clean, affordable ($28), lightweight, portable, and effective.

6) Portable Baby Seat

This portable seat is perfect for babies that have good neck control but aren’t quiet old enough to sit up by themselves yet. I love that it provides the little one with support and even has built in toys to help keep them entertained. The fabric portion is machine washable, and it is portable so you can position the seat in whichever room you desire. It also conveniently folds flat for travel or storage. Both of my children loved this chair and at $43 it’s at an affordable price point for most.

7) Vitamin D drops

Not all new parents may be aware, but the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that breastfed and partially breastfed babies get daily Vitamin D supplementation. I particularly love this Ddrops brand because your child gets the full recommended 400IU of Vitamin D in just one drop. You can either place the drop directly on your nipple, or inside a bottle so it has versatility.

8) Ubbi diaper pail

This Ubbi diaper pail is sleek, practical, and will aestetically compliment any nursery. The main feature I love the most about this particular pail is that it does not require special bags which provides the freedom to use the trash bags you already have. It does a fantastic job of trapping in the smell when it’s closed, and once your child(ren) is out of diapers can seamlessly transition to a regular trash bin.

9) NoseFrida Snotsucker

I know, I know, it sounds weird and gross but hear me out. With this nasal aspirator, you use the suction from your mouth to suck out mucus from your baby’s nose in a very hygienic way. Between the tubing and the hygiene filters, no mucus actually gets anywhere near your mouth and it’s incredibly effective in clearing a baby’s stuffy nose. The blue bulb nasal aspirators that they provide you in the hospital pale in comparison to how effective this NoseFrida Snotsucker is. When an infant is sick and having a hard time breathing due to excessive mucus, you need a product handy that will help give them the relief that they need. This is that product. You’ll appreciate just how useful & effective it is when your little one is sick.

With the holidays coming up, this list can also serve as a gift guide for any new parents in your life. The items listed are thoughtful, affordable, and have made my life easier by using them. Get them for yourself, or get them for someone else, either way you’ll be glad you did and you can thank me later.
