In 2024, I promised myself I would embrace my personal style, and how it can vary from day to day depending on what I have going on. From my mom uniform of running shorts & a t-shirt to a cocktail dress that same evening for a date night with hubby, and everywhere in-between, I love using clothes as a form of personal expression.

Our fashion sense is a combination of our aesthetic judgment, personal taste, and an understanding of current trends. It’s how we visually represent ourselves to the world, and it can be empowering to use clothing & accessories to tell a story without words.
That’s why I am so excited to have been selected to cover the 2024 Kansas City Fashion Week from 9/20/24 to 9/28/24!
With only two days of runway shows left, I can say that it has been a huge success so far, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store.
After having attended the Kickoff Party:

Media night:

and one day of the runway shows:

I’ve learned 3 valuable lessons that I think can be useful to my fellow fashion lovers as well.
Attending Fashion Week can teach you:
1. Trend Forecasting
You’ll gain firsthand insight into upcoming fashion trends, fabrics, and color palettes, helping you understand the direction of the industry. Even if you’re not someone who wears particularly trendy clothes, and your aesthetic is more timeless, it’s still fun to know what’s “in” for a fashion season.

Fashion designers do an amazing job staying on top of current trends in the industry, while still putting their spin on it, so attending a fashion week fashion show gives you inside knowledge on what you can expect to see in the mainstream media in the coming weeks/months.
2. Designer Perspectives
Engaging with designers and their collections reveals their creative processes and influences, providing a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship and storytelling in fashion.
As someone who sews a little bit, I know the level of dedication, focus, vision, and creativity that has to go into each garment, let alone a whole collection. So having the privilege to be front and center of KCFW makes you really appreciate the creative minds, the beautiful models, and whole support team needed to out on a great series of fashion shows.

You don’t necessarily need to be a fashion guru or personal stylist to admire an artist at work, and see them in their element.
3. Networking Opportunities
Fashion Week is a hub for industry professionals, offering chances to connect with designers, influencers, and other attendees, which can be invaluable for career growth.

This may not be as applicable to someone who isn’t entrenched in the fashion industry, but sometimes, the most amazing connections can occur when you least expect them. While you may be attending a fashion week just to admire the clothes, you may encounter someone who can be added to your community and make a friend along the way.
Fashion Week offers insights into emerging trends, designer creativity, and cultural influences. It showcases new styles and color palettes, highlights sustainable practices, and reveals the industry’s direction.

A key benefit of attending Kansas City Fashion Week is that observing runway presentations can also inspire personal style and understanding of fashion marketing. Additionally, it can reflect social issues and movements, making it a rich source of cultural commentary.
